Let’s Make Movement Enjoyable Again
Summer Reset Series: BEAMS Method — E is for Enjoyable Exercise
It’s easy to forget just how powerful movement is—until life hands you a season that tests everything.
This past year has been one of those seasons for me.
With grief, physical pain, and emotional fatigue showing up like unexpected visitors, I’ve had to dig deep. And while I haven’t always had the answers, I’ve had one consistent companion: movement.
Not the punishing kind. Not the “should-do” gym routine.
But movement that supports me, anchors me, and reminds me I’m still alive.
This is what I call Enjoyable Exercise—the second pillar in my BEAMS method—and it’s been nothing short of a lifeline.
Movement That Meets You Where You Are
There were days I barely had the energy to stretch, let alone do yoga. Days when a pinched nerve in my back forced me to rethink what “fitness” looked like.
So I pivoted.
Instead of yoga flows, I pulled out my thera band. I started doing monster walks across my living room—not glamorous, but exactly what my body needed. And to make it bearable? I took it outside, turned on music, and reminded myself that these little steps were building strength.
I’ve also become more aware that aging bodies need muscle. If I want to keep dancing, hiking, and chasing joy, I need to keep my strength. That doesn’t mean heavy lifting or intimidating routines—it means a few hand weights, a little resistance, and a whole lot of self-compassion.
Exercise as a Form of Sanity
When I was caring for my mom during her final weeks, I prioritized 30–40 minutes of yoga every morning. That sacred time was my sanity. And when I could sneak away for a short midday walk, I’d lace up my shoes and step into the cold winter air—just to feel the sunshine and remember who I was.
Exercise in those moments wasn’t about physique.
It was about clarity, breath, and peace.
What If Exercise Didn’t Feel Like Exercise?
Before gyms and fitness apps, people didn’t “work out”—they lived actively. That’s the kind of movement I invite you to rediscover.
Gardening: Digging, planting, harvesting—this is a full-body ritual rooted in nourishment and beauty.
Housework: Sweeping, vacuuming, scrubbing—get your heart rate up and your house sparkling.
Joyful hobbies: Dance in the kitchen. Hike to a waterfall. Ride your bike under the sun.
Walk & talk: Bring your meetings outside. Let your body and ideas move together.
Play: Frisbee, catch, badminton—fitness that makes you laugh is the kind that sticks.
Let It Be Easy. Let It Be Joyful. Let It Be You.
Movement doesn’t have to look a certain way.
It doesn’t have to be structured, sweaty, or serious.
It just has to feel right for you.
When you honor your body’s needs—especially in hard times—you reclaim your vitality, one movement at a time.
So go ahead. Stretch. Stroll. Dance it out.
You’re not just moving your body—you’re moving through life, with grace and joy.
